Why List Building Is Vital For Every Business

Every business needs to build a list (by that I mean a list of your current and prospective customers), and now you might think yes sure but list building does not apply to my business. Okay so then do not build a list but if say you own a restaurant and wonder why your competitor is full every night in Winter and you are not then the chances are it is down to them building a customer list.

Make no mistake, and ignore this advice at your peril, every business offline or online should build an email list, no matter what you are selling, be it furniture, hotel rooms, food, actually it really does not matter what you are selling online or offline e.g. a physical business such as restaurant a clothes shop, well pretty much anything - you need to build a list.

Okay so you run a restaurant in a busy coastal town that does well in the evening and at lunchtime in Summer but is very quiet or even closed in Winter, but you get a lot of people coming in for morning coffee or afternoon tea. But hey why bother getting the email addresses of those customers as they are only spending a few pounds or dollars on their drinks and not big money on lunches or evening meals. So really you do not want to collect their email addresses do you?

Wrong! Out of everyone that comes into that restaurant these are exactly the people you need to collect the emails from. But you can hardly give them a computer to sign up on can you? But you can capture their email address “Offline” - give them a card with their drinks, offering say a free meal for two or a bottle of wine for one lucky couple per month, but only if they fill in their email details and hand it back to you. This is called “Offline” list building and in this economy could see your business through the Winter or not.

Imagine this, it is January, it is snowing and you have no bookings for the weekend, so what do you do? Put up a cut price special board outside, where people are too busy rushing past to see it. Or do you sit back in the warmth of your restaurant and email your list offering a free bottle of wine with every two main meals served this weekend?

The person that rushed past your restaurant because it was snowing and did not notice your offer will however open your email in the warmth of their home and see your offer. Not just that - all of the people on your list will see the offer including those who did not even walk past your restaurant today.
