What You Can Do Today to Develop a Relationship With Your Email List and Why It’s Important

So - you’ve built your squeeze page and you are getting opt-ins. In fact, you are pretty organized and you are sending emails to your subscribers regularly. But you have a nagging suspicion. “Am I really in touch with my subscribers? Are they just faceless email addresses? Do they, in fact, know anything about me at all?”

This informative article will explain what I do to develop strong relationship with my list, and what you can do as well.

It’s probably important to remember that a lot of people don’t respond to lists they are subscribed to anyhow. It’s nothing personal, but we’re all busy. (The time we do, it can seem negative - we unsubscribe!)

If you want t be proactive in securing feedback, why not offer a customer survey? Don’t make it too long, and make certain that the questions are straightforward and clear. It’s surprising how hard it can be to construct a questionnaire that isn’t ambiguous. You can bribe subscribers by offering some kind of reward - a free ebook, info product, or software.

You see, the better the relationship with your list, the higher it will convert. It’s not about the size of your list; it’s about the quality. So don’t be afraid to share details about yourself. I always tell my lists when I’m going on vacation, and where I’m going. If it is somewhere attractive in Europe, I’ll be certain to provide links to a few photos. People do like that kind of stuff.

Stay with good content, but remember to open yourself up a little bit and let them see who you really are. Then watch what happens - you’ll move from marketer to trusted advisor.

Remember to treat your list as people, and make them know that there is a real person behind the email that you are sending them. I mean, I hate being shouted at, and some subject lines of emails I receive are just dreadful. For example, I really dislike headlines like “Download confirmed” or “You have received a payment from PayPal” and so on. They are major annoyances and a great way to get yourself a lost subscriber really quickly.

But don’t forget: your aim is to make money, so don’t feel you have to be too touchy-feely. A lot of people do make the mistake of “threatening” the relationship by actually asking people to buy things! You don’t need to worry about that. And if you feel that the product might not be right for every one of your subscribers - tell them! Be upfront that it is for beginners, or that it requires understanding of php, or whatever.

Above all, develop a writing style that is relaxed and friendly. A good way to start doing this is to read your text out loud to yourself before you send it. It’s amazing how you can pick up nuances and improve them. And check that you don’t have spelling howlers or embarrassing grammar errors - they don’t look good and damage your brand.

Your email list is your single most important asset after your apartment, house or car. Honor it. Develop the relationship.

My best to you.
