The Money Is In The List - Fact Or Fiction? Part 1

If you’ve been around internet marketing for more than five minutes then you will have heard the phrase “the money’s in the list.”

How true is this? Is it an internet urban myth pushed at us by marketers or is it a sound business practice? You might be surprised to know that it is in fact BOTH!

Basically there are two schools of internet marketers:

1. Find (or produce) a product to SELL, and then use all your marketing knowledge to sell as quickly as possible and make money.

2. Find (or produce) a product to GIVE AWAY, and then collect the names and email addresses of the people you give the product to, and then build a lasting relationship with them by over delivering when it comes to information and advice.

I personally have tried both methods and believe they both have their place in a newbie’s marketing arsenal!

The first method of finding (or producing) a product to sell quickly, is perhaps the most appealing method most newbies come across and try.

Why? Because as a newbie we can be easily swayed by the slick ad copy in the sales letter and persuaded that, by buying this ‘fantastic product’ and following the ‘proven techniques we will show you’, we can make huge amounts of money for doing next to nothing!

Now I’m not saying that this is impossible, but in truth, most of the sales letters that promise huge riches overnight are not worth the virtual paper they are written on!

After about three years (and a boat load of wasted money!) of believing all the hype that bombarded my inbox every day, I finally realised that the only people earning money with these systems were the people selling them - I certainly wasn’t!

Having said all that, one day I took a step back and thought about all the information I had bought and what, once the hype was removed, I was left with - and it proved to be quite an eye opener!

As it turned out most of the products I had bought actually had good content and good ideas and good training written into each one - I just hadn’t seen it!

After I disregarded the ‘push button software’ and ‘Google loophole’ products I looked again at the ‘do this step, then this step…’ products and I realised they all taught a simple 1,2,3 method for making money selling other peoples products.

What was this method?

ClickBank of course!

We all know about ClickBank, and if you don’t then do a search for it and a bit of homework and you soon will.

We all know it has thousands of products - some good, some not -in dozens of niches, all with the tools and sales copy, emails, banners, ad copy etc already produced for us to promote and earn a commission!!

What I hadn’t done was ‘join the dots’ between the products I had bought and how to earn money - as it turned out those very products were how I could make money!!

All I had to do was pick a product and, after signing up for my affiliate link, promote it like mad.

All the promotional methods, whether you have paid for them or they ate free, were actually detailed in each of the products I had bought, looked at and then disregarded as C**P!

So now I had a product to market, all I had to do was promote it. Unfortunately at the time I couldn’t afford expensive Google AdWords or other paid for methods, so I had to concentrate on the free marketing options out there.

Luckily there are loads of these, and they include:

• Free Ads - one of my favourites!
• Articles - again a good one
• Blogs - not one I’ve tried, but can be very successful
• Facebook
• Twitter
• Squidoo
• You Tube
• Signature on your emails
• Forum posts - another really good one

The list goes on………

It really is possible to make a living by promoting ClickBank products in the various ways above, but don’t just think Internet Marketing products - have a look at the other categories within ClickBank and with a bit of thought and research you might find an undeveloped niche and make a real killing!

There are however major problems with promoting products blindly like this, and they are that its very time consuming, a lot of hard work and most importantly you have to do all the work again and again for every product you promote.

In other words you will start every campaign from scratch -OK you might get quicker with time and you might find a ‘Golden Goose’ source but you will still have to promote to a whole new audience every time.

With this in mind, the next method I will talk about has many merits over this method.

I hope this has given you something to think about. If nothing else, take a look at those old products cluttering up your hard drive and see if they have any hidden advertising/promoting gems just sitting there waiting for you to use them.
