How to Know If You Can Make Money Online With a Mailing List

“Anyone can make money online,” people say. Oh yeah? How many people do you know who derive all their income from the web? But there’s more. “All you need is a mailing list,” and, wait for it, “The money is in the list.”

The fact is, not everybody can make money online, and not every one is able to build a profitable email list that makes them money.

So here’s a quick checklist of questions to ask yourself if you are thinking of those buckets of gold at the end of the Internet rainbow, or if you have been toiling at an online rock face and feel you aren’t getting very far.

First - are you a detail person? This is important, because like everything else, online success lies in attention - massive attention - to detail. And being 99.9% accurate isn’t enough. Things have to be 100 per cent all the time, every time. Subscriber opt-in procedures, autoresponder emails, shopping cart links - each and everyone require a hawk like focus on detail. And, frankly, a lot of people get bored with this.

Second, are you an optimistic person? It can take toil and sweat to build any worthwhile commercial enterprise, and an Internet business is no different. Setbacks are frustratingly frequent, and it can take far longer than you imagined to earn your first dollar online. And, frankly, a lot of people give up pretty quickly.

Third, how willing are you to invest money? There are non-negotiable basics that you require: web hosting, domain names, software (lots of it) and you will find, before you know it, that online success (like any other enterprise) sucks more cash from you before you will see any return. And, frankly, a lot of people start out with hopeless unrealistic expectations, not least because they harbor hopes of the get-rich-quick variety. And, frankly, a lot of people are broke when they start and wonder why they’re broke when they walk away from their brief flirtation with the Internet.

Fourth, how willing are you to invest your time? (You probably already have a day job. And, these days, day jobs are even more demanding.) So, at the end of a day from corporate hell, you won’t feel like writing an article, coding a web page, sorting our a refund issue, writing an info product, preparing an ezine mailout, and so on. Frankly, a lot of people completely underestimate the time they are prepared to make available.

Fifth, how do you react to thievery and sharp practice? The web is, in many ways, unpoliced. There are unscrupulous villains who will rob you by stealing your download page information, plagiarising your copy, ripping off your info products, blatantly disregard your license terms and even steal your online identity. Frankly, that’s the last straw for a lot of people.

But - wait.

Here’s the payoff: you can make money online with a mailing list. Here’s how. Pay attention to the details, and get it right. If you feel your nose is always at the grindstone, remember to lift your eyes to the hills, and remember your vision. Invest wisely only in what you really need; disregard each and every snake oil email offering your turnkey solutions or dollar templates. Work steadily and methodically. Don’t get knocked sideways by setbacks.
