Do you know how many e-mail addresses are on your list?

If you want your list to grow, that may be the wrong question to ask. Instead, ask yourself how many people are on that list. It’s easy to get caught up in capturing e-mail addresses without stopping to realize that behind each address is a living, breathing person with wants, needs and desires. You make money, of course, when your company provides what they seek. But first they must opt in to your list.

When list building, consider your own e-mail inbox. Which messages are you more likely to open, ones that seem impersonal and computer-generated or ones that appear to be written by an actual person? Here are a few ways to add a human touch to your list-building efforts:

* Be ethical. Use above-board means to obtain e-mail addresses, and avoid sending spam that will only annoy recipients.

* Add personality. For some reason, many people lapse into computer-speak when writing an e-mal. Keep the tone conversational, just as you would if speaking with the recipient in person.

* Avoid the hard sale. Nothing will get a message deleted faster than an overt sales message. Instead, provide useful information that recipients will appreciate.

Remember, it’s always easier to keep a current customer happy than to attract a new one. Never sacrifice a potential long-term relationship for a quick one-time sale. Your ultimate goal is to be able to work your list and make sales for several years, list building consistently over time.
